A perennial flowering plant in the legume family Fabaceae. It is an important forage crop in many countries. Alfalfa normally lives between 4 to 8 years and grows up to 3.3 ft.

 The Spanish name “alfalfa” comes from the Arabic word “al-fac-facah”, which means “father of all foods.” Spanish colonizers introduced alfalfa to America in the 16th century. It was found to be a good source of protein and minerals for livestock.

Physical Properties

It has a long history of usage as a therapeutic plant for humans in addition to being used as feed. Its seeds or dried leaves can be used as a supplement, or the seeds can be germinated and eaten as alfalfa sprouts.

They are a good source of vitamin K and include a variety of other minerals such as vitamin C, copper, manganese, and folate. Alfalfa also contains a lot of bioactive plant chemicals such as saponins, coumarins, flavonoids, phytosterols, phytoestrogens, and alkaloids (1).
