Star anise is harvested from an evergreen tree from the Magnolia family that takes approximately 15 years to produce seeds. It is native to China and Vietnam. Today, star anise is used in cooking and skincare products.

Anise was used to make liquor in Egypt. It gets its name due to the shape looking similar to a star. Anise was used in jams and syrups in 16th-century Europe.
