A plant commonly used to make teas for traditional medicine. It is also used in incense, potpourri, and in bath sachets. Roman chamomile is a perennial while German chamomile is an annual.

The name "chamomile" comes from a combination of Greek words that mean "earth apple" and "on the ground." This is possibly due to its fragrance, which is similar to that of an apple. Egyptians used it in dedication to Ra, and the Romans used it as incense.

Physical Properties

Chamomile extract has been widely used as a moderate sedative to calm nerves and reduce anxiety, as well as to treat hysteria, nightmares, insomnia, and other sleep difficulties [1].

Chamomile has long been appreciated as a digestive relaxant and has been used to treat a variety of gastrointestinal problems such as flatulence, indigestion, diarrhea, anorexia, motion sickness, nausea, and vomiting [2,3].
